Description
This is a reverse-engineered replacement for the Hybrid Module in the Macintosh Portable (non-backlit version). It has been tested on the tester / downstream board described here, and in a few M5120 Macintosh Portables for functionality. This is not compatible with the M5126 Backlit Macintosh Portable. The small screw-type potentiometer in the top left is for adjusting battery-level reporting (don’t adjust unless absolutely necessary, use the email on the About page for assistance).
Before ordering, please run through the steps on this page to see if your Portable measures close to the expected resistance and voltage values. If any of the surrounding traces or hardware has been damaged, a replacement hybrid may do more harm than good. Feel free to contact me (again, see the About page) with questions, and I’d love to add your portable’s measurements and behavior to this list for more reference points.
This is a drop-in replacement, but requires soldering work to remove the original and install. See the product image for how to orient the module. The headers necessary are of ‘machined pin’ style and are very thin and delicate. The pins will not be pre-installed on your module, to avoid them being damaged in shipping.
After installation, take care to watch the voltage on Q16’s middle pin (this is the system’s main 5v rail). If this spikes above about 5.3 volts, there can be trouble. Also watch the A/D line voltage (top left pin of the hybrid with reference to the product image). This should not go above 5v, ever.
Included: The Hybrid Module Recreation and necessary pin headers for installation.
