Description
Newton Internal Serial
This is an expansion board to add the standard circular serial port (mini-DIN 8) to a Newton 2×00, presuming the target Newton doesn’t possess some existing internal expansion board.
This is a hobbyist-level product using new-old-stock parts for the AppleTalk transceiver. If it arrived DOA, I will refund shipping and the purchase price, but you must cover return shipping cost. The warranty on this item is one month only.
These are the production PCB version, with no prototype areas on the board. Installation and setup are exactly the same as for the prototype version.
Installation
Installation is a little delicate, just because of how small the connectors in question are.
- Orient the board such that the serial port is in the expansion slot, and start the screw in the hole near the connector
- You have to use the teeny tiny 0.6mm thick spacer that comes with the expansion board
- Put the gasket in-between the expansion board and the Newton’s screw mounting post (see gallery images)
- Start the screw into the mounting post, then plug in the connector
- Line up the connector very carefully, it’s delicate but also takes some force to engage
- Tighten the first screw
- Don’t close the back of the Newton yet! Proceed to Setup.
Setup
See the product gallery images.
- Flip the switch to the left to set the port always-on, then use the Newton Connection Kit with your new serial port to install this package
- Disconnect the Newton and flip the switch to the right
- Open the Prefs application – you will see a new item for Internal Serial in the list
- When you want to sync your Newton, select “Route Primary Port to Internal Serial Slot”
- Do your syncing and package installing, etc
- When you are finished, disable that option in the Prefs application
- Close up the Newton now, you’re done
